This community engagement project used co-creation principles and innovative technologies and events to facilitate the Lower East Side (NYC) community to reimagine 3 key neighborhood streets. There were multiple components of the project: physical visioning events (Canal on the street itself, and Ludlow via a scale model), an online engagement platform (makeourstreet.nyc and Streetmix Lower East Side), and open realtime data on street usage.
The Make Our Street website gave realtime data about how many people were using specific Lower East Side streets, information about the visioning events, a connection to Streetmix Lower East Side (where community members could digitally design their street), and principles behind the project.
The idea of the Canal Street event was to get people out onto the street itself to tangibly and physically vision how it could be like: to actually (temporarily) design the street in real life. Much was learned, and I would be privileged and excited to hold a similar event again.
The Ludlow Street event used a scale model of 3 blocks for stakeholders to add things like trees, planters, curb extensions, and street seats to specific spots.
